Marine Major Brian Dennis And Nubs

Several weeks ago there was an absolutely horrific story about a marine that was videotaped throwing a puppy from a cliff. A Marine Corps response to an ASPCA demand for action attempted to reassure the ASPCA and the public at large that the behavior of that Marine is completely unacceptable and a complete misrepresentation of the Corps as a whole. Major Brian Dennis and Nubs, the German Shepard- Border Collie mix that adopted him, bring some truth to the Corps' statement.

A Call For Action

Proposed Measure to Strip Animal Shelters & Animal Control Agencies of Their Ability to Microchip Animals (proposed by the Florida Board of Veterinary Medicine)

MicrochipHow many times has Fido scooted out the front door when you opened it just a wee bit? Or how about when you let Fido out in the back yard for some exercise and come back to find Fido is gone and there's a huge hole under the fence? Or you find yourself in the midst of a hurricane and Fido is lost in the confusion? Fido is out there, somewhere, on his own and you have no way to find him...you don't know where to look. You spend days posting "missing" posters all over the neighborhood and pray that someone calls. Then, one day, someone does call: it's the local animal shelter and they've found Fido and he was identified by the microchip you had implanted during the last visit to the vet. What a relief!

Overweight Labrador RetrieverWhile veterinarians estimate that more than 40% of all dogs are overweight, research is showing that not all overweight dogs are necessarily overindulging, nor are their masters too liberal with treats or table scraps. There may be medical reasons tto explain why your dog is overweight.

Just as with humans, obesity in dogs creates a predisposition to ailments, both chronic and life-threatening, like diabetes, bone and joint disease, cardiovascular disease, reproductive disorders, skin conditions, and a laundry list of cancers. Obesity is also a major contributor to a shorter life span. And, just as with humans, behavioural changes with diet and exercise can help Scruffy get back to a healthier and longer living condition.
